A new beginning!

All Change!!

It’s all change over here at Elemental Core! Gone is the old Zenfolio website and I have decided to build my own.
I was using Zenfolio as my host for many years and at first I thought is would be perfect for my needs as a photographer. I can shoot, upload and sell directly from my site. This never really happened. The site just became a repository for my images. I would do a shoot and often just upload all the “keepers”. The result was an unruly and disorganised mess!

Zenfolio was very good for sharing work with clients though but ultimately I found it too restricting. I had lost control.

There is a lot more to life than just photography.

I should clarify that statement somewhat. Without immersing yourself in life you will never produce meaningful images. This immersion is a two way street. An artist must have communication with the world around. You could argue that a body of work can be a personal thing that doesn’t need external input but I have tried that and it didn’t work for me. Why? I became isolated, cut off.

Target Audience

This was always part of each assignment brief at university and it constantly gave me nightmares. how can I know who my target audience is? Is it not anyone that takes the time to view my work? I now see what a naive person I was.

“You need to know where you are going or you will never arrive!”

I don’t know if that is an original quote there but it did come out of my head. I will add that it bears a resemblance to this one from Zig Ziglar:

“If you aim at nothing you will hit it every time.”

Even if you create something that is very personal it will still appeal to a segment of the population.

Of course, this matters little if you are a hobbyist, but if you want to make a living from this stuff then you had better take your audience seriously.
